Undeclared hazardous materials shipments are DOT regulated materials that are shipped without proper identification via package marks/labels, placards and documentation. Undeclared hazardous materials shipments increases the likelihood of hazmat incidents and result in heavy fines for the offeror of the hazardous material. The vast majority of undeclared hazardous materials shipments are due to individuals who offer a package for transportation without the knowledge of what is regulated and the corresponding rules.
This overview course provides students with general awareness/familiarization training of the US DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). Our instructors explain the 14 Pre-Transportation functions of HMR and explains how to recognize and identify hazardous materials consistent with the hazard communication standards of the HMR. In addition, security risks associated with hazardous materials transportation and methods designed to enhance transportation security are explained.
This course meets the general awareness and security awareness training requirements of 49 CFR 172.704 (a)(1) & (4). Individuals who prepare a shipment (ex., packaging, labeling, signing paperwork, etc.) for transportation will require additional function specific training.
Students may stop and restart this course at their own pace. The course consists of video, practice problems and an examination. Students should allocate approximately 3.5 hours at the computer in order to complete this course. Upon successful completion of an online test, students will be issued a certificate. Students can always call or e-mail an instructor while working on course materials. Students will be provided with an electronic manual that includes all course materials.
